Grants supporting Canberra's Community Gardens now open for applications

07 July 2026

The ACT Government is inviting applications for Round 12 of the Community Garden Grants program, consistent with its ongoing commitment to support vibrant, sustainable and inclusive community spaces across Canberra.

A total of $40,000 is available this round, with individual grants of up to $10,000 per project to help community groups establish new gardens or enhance existing ones.

Applications are now open and will close on Tuesday 18 August 2026.

For more information and to apply, visit the Everyday Climate Choices website.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water Suzanne Orr:

“Community gardens are at the heart of connected, resilient neighbourhoods, and we’re proud to continue supporting local groups through the Community Garden Grants program.

"Since 2015, this program has helped bring more than 100 community garden projects to life across Canberra – creating greener spaces where people can come together, grow food, and share knowledge.

"These gardens also play an important role in helping Canberra respond to climate change by reducing urban heat and supporting biodiversity.

"This year, we’re continuing to prioritise the removal of artificial grass, which contributes to urban heat, microplastic pollution and environmental harm. Replacing it with natural, living systems is a win for our climate and our community.

"These grants could also support a wide range of projects, including traditional food, Indigenous bush tucker, and sensory gardens to ensure these spaces are inclusive and accessible.

"I encourage community groups across Canberra to apply and take advantage of this opportunity to create or enhance green spaces in their neighbourhoods.”

Quotes attributable to Peter Hill, Service Director, Rotary Club of Canberra Sundowner:

"The ACT Community Garden Grant has been used by the Rotary Club of Canberra Sundowners to extend and enhance the existing Community Service #1 (CS#1) vegetable garden and to support vulnerable people to start their own vegetable gardens through a series of practical vegetable growing workshops. Key improvements to the garden included building three new large and accessible wicking garden beds that are already full of vegetable produce, improved watering systems and a new garden shed.

"Community members are engaged in weekly sessions at CS#1 to help maintain the vegetable garden and to learn more about growing vegetables and becoming more self-sufficient. The community vegetable garden is adjacent to the CS#1 food pantry and is providing fresh vegetables and herbs to those in need."

Quotes attributable to Alison McGregor, Board Chair, Ainslie Church of Christ:

“The ACT Community Garden Grants have greatly contributed to establishing a vibrant community resource at Ainslie Church of Christ’s community garden - Garden@Limestone. The funds have made a huge difference to its physical infrastructure, and all the improvements have enhanced the garden's look and functionality. Two years down the track, there is a lovely sense of pride in our little community. Lots of learning and sharing opportunities abound.”
